| 表面の説明 | Bare-headed, draped bust of Emperor Otho facing right, rendered in fine high-relief typical of early imperial Roman gold coinage. The portrait displays the characteristic physiognomy of Otho with a short, slightly fleshy face and close-cropped hair. The bust is truncated at the shoulder, with drapery visible at the base. The circular legend encircles the portrait close to the coin's edge, reading IMP M OTHO CAESAR AVG TR P in incuse Latin capitals. |

Otho's reign lasted 95 days. He seized power in January 69 AD by bribing the Praetorian Guard to murder Galba, then killed himself in April after his forces were routed at Bedriacum — making this aureus one of the briefest imperial gold issues in the entire sequence of Roman coinage. The SECVRITAS P R reverse was a calculated propaganda choice, projecting a stability his government never came close to achieving.
