| Beschrijving voorzijde | Bare head of Octavian (the future Augustus) facing right, rendered in a classicizing style with short, layered hair swept forward over the forehead in the characteristic Augustan coiffure. The portrait is executed with fine sculptural modelling, conveying youthful authority. No legend appears on the obverse, the field being plain around the bust. The flan is slightly irregular, as typical of late Republican and early Imperial hammered gold coinage. The portrait closely follows the emerging official iconography established for Octavian in the period preceding his assumption of the title Augustus. |
