Nerva struck this aureus in the opening months of his reign, immediately following Domitian's assassination in September 96 AD. The new emperor faced a singular problem: the Praetorian Guard and much of the army had genuinely mourned Domitian, and Nerva's legitimacy rested on Senate approval alone — a fragile foundation. Gold issues invoking Fortuna were part of a deliberate early coinage program aimed at projecting imperial confidence before that confidence was fully warranted. Nerva's reign lasted just 16 months; aurei from his first emission are among the shortest-window gold issues of the Flavian-to-Antonine transition.
