Nerva's third consulship and acceptance of the title Pater Patriae both fell in 97 AD, a year defined by serious political instability — the Praetorian Guard had effectively mutinied, forcing Nerva to adopt Trajan in October as the only credible way to secure his own survival. This aureus was struck at Rome against that backdrop, not as celebration but as necessity, projecting an authority the aging emperor was actively struggling to maintain.
Nerva died in January 98, leaving a reign of just sixteen months.
