The EX S C legend on this aureus — "by decree of the Senate" — is unusual on an imperial gold coin. Under Augustus and his successors, the Senate's authority over coinage was nominally reserved for base metal; gold and silver were the emperor's prerogative. Nero's decision to invoke senatorial authority on a gold issue in 61–62 AD is read by some scholars as a deliberate political gesture during what was still, outwardly, a period of cooperative rule with the Senate — before the reign turned openly autocratic.
RIC I 29 is among the scarcer varieties of Neronian gold. The Ceres type connects to Rome's grain supply concerns of the early 60s AD, when Egyptian and North African shipments were politically fraught.
