Maximianus was elevated to co-emperor by Diocletian in 285 AD — first as Caesar, then Augustus the following year — as part of a deliberate restructuring of imperial authority that would eventually formalize into the Tetrarchy. The IOVI CONSERVAT AVGG legend positions Jupiter as the divine protector of both emperors, a theological framework Diocletian engineered carefully: he took the title Iovius, linking himself directly to Jupiter, while Maximianus received Herculius, subordinating him symbolically even within shared rule.
