Maximianus issued this aureus as co-emperor under Diocletian's tetrarchic arrangement, formalized in 286 AD when Diocletian elevated him to Augustus. The reverse type invoking Jupiter as protector of the emperors was not incidental — the entire theological framework of the Tetrarchy assigned Jupiter to Diocletian and Hercules to Maximianus, making IOVI CONSERVAT AVGG types struck under Maximianus a deliberate assertion of shared divine legitimacy rather than Maximianus's own patron deity.
RIC V.2 541F places this among the rarer die variants in the series. The Lugdunum mint was the principal western source for Maximianus's gold coinage during this decade.
