With his left hand he seizes the centaur Nessus by the hair, while his raised right hand brandishes a club above the struggling figure. Nessus is depicted rearing and twisting in resistance, his semi-equine form rendered with vigour. The composition reflects the Herculian dynastic iconography adopted by Maximian as a member of the Herculian tetrarchs. The mintmark PR, identifying the Rome mint, appears in the exergue, with the encircling legend VIRTVS AVGG. |
