| Reverse description | Hercules, nude save for the Nemean lion skin draped over his left shoulder and arm, stands in dynamic confrontation to the right. With his left hand he seizes the centaur Nessus by the hair, while his raised right hand brandishes a club above the struggling figure. Nessus is depicted rearing and twisting in resistance, his semi-equine form rendered with vigour. The composition reflects the Herculian dynastic iconography adopted by Maximian as a member of the Herculian tetrarchs. The mintmark PR, identifying the Rome mint, appears in the exergue, with the encircling legend VIRTVS AVGG. |
