This aureus belongs to the coinage of Galba, struck during the chaos of 68–69 AD — the Year of the Four Emperors — when the imperial mint was producing gold at speed to pay the legions whose loyalty was the only currency that actually mattered. Galba's hold on power lasted just seven months before the Praetorian Guard murdered him in the Roman Forum and sold the throne to Otho.
The MARS VLTOR reverse invokes Mars the Avenger, the deity Augustus had tied to the Temple he vowed after Philippi. Galba's use of the type was a calculated appeal to Augustan legitimacy — a new emperor desperate to look like a restoration rather than a coup.
