Struck in 34 BC during Antony's Donations of Alexandria period, this aureus commemorates Antyllus — Antony's eldest son by Fulvia — by incorporating the young man's name into the coinage, an act of deliberate dynastic projection that infuriated Octavian's faction in Rome. Antyllus was executed immediately after the fall of Alexandria in 30 BC, dragged from sanctuary at Caesar's statue on Octavian's orders, making coins bearing his name among the more historically charged issues of the late Republic.
The triple iteration of "III" in the obverse legend reflects Antony's accumulated titles at their peak, before the formal declaration of war and the stripping of his consulship by the Senate.
