| Reverse description | Bare-headed portrait bust of Marcus Aemilius Lepidus facing right, depicted in a naturalistic late Republican portrait style with short, neatly rendered hair. Behind the portrait in the left field appear a pontifical aspergillum (sprinkler) and simpulum (ladle), emblems of his office as Pontifex Maximus and references to his sacerdotal dignities. The surrounding legend M · LEPIDVS · III · VIR · R · P · C encircles the bust, proclaiming his triumviral status. The portrait conveys a somewhat softer, idealized physiognomy compared to Antony's bearded likeness on the obverse. A border of dots frames the entire design. |
