Reverse description The Emperor Hadrian, togate and standing left, extends his right hand to raise the kneeling personification of Africa, who wears an elephant-scalp headdress and holds corn ears in her right hand. Between the two figures, stalks of corn rise from the ground, symbolising the agricultural fertility of the province. The scene commemorates Hadrian's journey to Africa and his benefactions to the region. The reverse legend arcs around the upper field in bold Latin capitals.
