| Obverse description | Laureate and draped bust of Hadrian facing right, rendered in high relief with finely detailed curled hair and a short beard, characteristic of the emperor's early portraiture. The paludamentum is fastened at the right shoulder with a fibula, with drapery folds visible across the left shoulder and chest. The encircling Latin legend reads IMP CAESAR TRAIAN HADRIANVS AVG, distributed around the periphery of the flan. The portrait exhibits the confident, idealized likeness of Hadrian as adopted from his predecessor Trajan, consistent with coinage struck at the outset of his reign in AD 117. The die-cutting is bold and competent, typical of the Rome Mint's early Hadrianic production. |
