| Obverse description | Laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust of Hadrian facing right, depicted with characteristic short beard and curly hair rendered in fine detail beneath the laurel wreath. The emperor wears a paludamentum fastened at the shoulder, conveying military authority. The surrounding legend reads IMP CAESAR TRAIAN HADRIANVS AVG, distributed evenly around the periphery of the flan. The portrait displays the high-relief modelling typical of early Hadrianic aurei struck at Rome, reflecting the transition from Trajanic to Hadrianic portraiture. The flan is irregular, consistent with hammered gold coinage of the period. |
