This aureus belongs to a group issued following Hadrian's extended tour of Egypt, which he visited in 130 AD — the same journey during which his favourite Antinous drowned in the Nile under circumstances never satisfactorily explained. The personification of the Nile on Roman coinage was a direct product of that tour, part of a deliberate provincial series celebrating the territories Hadrian had personally inspected. No other emperor issued so systematic a geographic coinage from firsthand experience of the provinces depicted.
