| Obverse description | Laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust of Hadrian facing right, rendered in high relief with finely detailed curly hair and short beard characteristic of his early portraiture. The emperor's effigy displays a muscular cuirass with visible pteryges at the shoulder, over which a paludamentum is fastened. The surrounding legend is incuse in Latin capitals within a beaded border, running continuously around the periphery of the flan. The bold, confident modeling of the portrait reflects the accomplished engraving style of the Roman Imperial mint at the outset of Hadrian's reign. |
