This issue belongs to Hadrian's famous series of "travel coins" — provincial personification aurei struck to commemorate his extensive tours of the empire between 121 and 134 AD. The Egypt type almost certainly commemorates his Nile journey of 130 AD, during which his beloved Antinous drowned near Hermopolis. Hadrian founded the city of Antinoöpolis on the site and declared Antinous a god — the Egyptian priesthood, familiar with deification and eager to please the emperor, proved unusually receptive to the new cult.
