Aureus - Hadrian ADVENTVI AVG AFRICAE, Africa

Hadrian's ADVENTVS series commemorated his extraordinary tours of the provinces — journeys unprecedented for a sitting emperor in their duration and ambition. The African visit, likely 128 AD, took him through Carthage and into the interior, where he personally presided over military exercises of the III Augusta legion at Lambaesis. His address to the troops there survives in a partial inscription, one of the most detailed records we have of Roman military life from any period.

The African types are notably scarcer than the parallel ADVENTVS issues for more westerly provinces, reflecting either shorter striking runs or differential survival rates across the series.
