Struck at Nicomedia during the brief window between Galerius's elevation to Augustus in May 305 — when Diocletian and Maximian simultaneously abdicated — and the collapse of the tetrarchic system the following year. Nicomedia was Diocletian's chosen eastern capital and remained a principal mint under Galerius, who had governed the region as Caesar since 293.
RIC VI 33 is a scarce type. The abdication of 305 represented the only voluntary, planned transfer of power in the entire history of the Roman imperial office — it lasted less than eighteen months before Constantine and Maxentius shattered the arrangement entirely.
