Galerius received the title Caesar in 293 AD under Diocletian's newly instituted Tetrarchy, and this Nicomedia issue belongs to the first wave of coinage struck to legitimize that arrangement. Nicomedia was Diocletian's own chosen capital in the East, making its mint politically central rather than peripheral. The IOVI CONSERVATORI reverse type was deliberately assigned to the Jovian line — Diocletian and Galerius — while Maximianus Herculius and Constantius took Herculean imagery, a theological division of imperial authority with no real precedent in Roman coinage.
RIC VI records this as an early Nicomedia issue, placing it among the first aurei struck for Galerius in his new rank.
