The COS VIII designation marks his eighth consulship, held ordinarily, while DES VIIII signals his designation for the ninth, a forward-dating device that advertised dynastic continuity rather than responded to any military achievement. Gold coinage under Domitian maintained a notably consistent fineness, a deliberate policy reversing Neronian debasement.
