| 表面の説明 | Laureate head of Domitian facing right, rendered in the naturalistic Flavian portrait style with finely detailed hair. The effigy occupies the central field, with the Imperial titulature legend disposed around the periphery within a beaded border. The portrait exhibits the characteristic strong jaw and close-cropped beard associated with early Domitianic coinage from his first regnal year. |

Struck in 81 AD, the year Domitian succeeded his brother Titus following the latter's death from fever in September. Domitian had long chafed under Titus's shadow and reportedly celebrated rather than mourned — a claim hostile ancient sources were eager to preserve. The tribunician and consular titulature on this piece dates it precisely to that transitional moment, before Domitian had accumulated the accumulated the honorifics of his later, more autocratic years.
