Beschrijving voorzijde Laureate head of Domitian facing right, rendered in fine high-relief portraiture characteristic of early Flavian coinage. The youthful features of the future emperor are depicted with careful attention to detail, including close-cropped curled hair beneath the laurel wreath. A beaded border encircles the design, with the legend distributed around the periphery of the flan.

Aanvullende informatie

Struck in 75 AD while Domitian was still under Vespasian's rule, this aureus belongs to a politically charged moment: Domitian had been granted the title PRINCEPS IVVENTVTIS — leader of youth — a designation that carried dynastic promise but little actual power. Vespasian kept his younger son at arm's length from real authority throughout his reign, favoring Titus decisively. The Spes reverse type, invoking hope, reads almost ironically given Domitian's frustrated ambitions during these years. He would wait until 81 AD to reign in his own name.
