Aureus - Domitian GERMANICVS COS XVI; Minerva

Domitian's repeated acclamation as "Germanicus" followed his campaigns against the Chatti in 83 AD — victories the senate considered largely manufactured, though he accepted a triumph regardless. The COS XVI dating places this issue in a narrow window when Domitian's grip on the mint was absolute; he had already executed several senators and was running the imperial administration with a micromanagement that contemporaries found exhausting and terrifying in equal measure.

RIC II.1 745 is among the types revised and renumbered in the 2007 Carradice and Buttrey recataloguing, which substantially reorganized the Flavian aureus sequence.
