| Obverse description | Laureate bust of Emperor Domitian facing right, rendered in high relief with finely detailed curls and an elaborate laurel wreath crowning the head. The portrait presents a strong, idealized imperial effigy with a bare neck truncation, consistent with the Flavian dynastic portraiture style. The encircling legend reads DOMITIANVS AVGVSTVS, distributed around the periphery of the flan. The die engraving displays the characteristic bold, confident style of the late Flavian mint at Rome. |

Domitian's repeated acclamation as "Germanicus" followed his campaigns against the Chatti in 83 AD — victories the senate considered largely manufactured, though he accepted a triumph regardless. The COS XVI dating places this issue in a narrow window when Domitian's grip on the mint was absolute; he had already executed several senators and was running the imperial administration with a micromanagement that contemporaries found exhausting and terrifying in equal measure.
RIC II.1 745 is among the types revised and renumbered in the 2007 Carradice and Buttrey recataloguing, which substantially reorganized the Flavian aureus sequence.
