Domitian's fourteenth consulship fell in 88 AD, the same year the Ludi Saeculares — the Secular Games, celebrated only once per generation — were held in Rome after a gap of over a century. Domitian presided over them personally, and the accompanying coin issues, including this aureus, functioned partly as commemorative output tied to that moment of calculated religious theater.
The GERMANICVS title had been self-awarded after campaigns on the Rhine in 83–84 AD, a claim his contemporaries received with some skepticism — Tacitus among them.
