This aureus falls within Domitian's tenure as Caesar under his father Vespasian — a period when the young Flavian was formally elevated but held no real command. Vespasian kept power tightly consolidated after the chaos of 69 AD, and Domitian's early coinage reflects that subordination: struck in his name to project dynastic continuity, not personal authority. He would wait nearly a decade more before becoming emperor himself.
