| Reverse description | Jupiter, the chief deity of the Roman pantheon, depicted standing facing left in a commanding pose. The god holds a thunderbolt in his extended right hand and a long vertical sceptre in his left hand, both attributes emblematic of his divine sovereignty. The figure is rendered in the characteristic late Roman style, with drapery falling across the lower body. The reverse legend IOVI CONSERVAT AVGG encircles the field, invoking Jupiter as protector of the two reigning Augusti. The design reflects the theological program of the Tetrarchy, wherein Diocletian identified himself under the divine protection of Jupiter Conservator. |
