His right hand rests upon a grounded club while his raised left hand displays the golden apples of the Hesperides, referencing his eleventh labour. The reverse legend HERCVLI VICTORI — 'To Hercules the Victorious' — encircles the figure, and the mint signature appears in the exergue, all enclosed within a beaded border. The choice of Hercules as a reverse type reflects the Tetrarchic theological programme in which the Caesars were aligned with the divine protector Hercules under the patronage of Maximian Herculius. |
