Obverse description Laureate head of Emperor Claudius facing right, rendered in high relief with finely detailed curls beneath the wreath. The bust is bare at the neck and shoulders, executed in the restrained classicising style characteristic of Claudian coinage. The encircling legend runs from lower left to lower right in bold, well-spaced Latin capitals, naming the emperor with his full titulature. The flan is slightly irregular in outline, as typical of hand-struck aurei of the period.
