| Obverse description | Laureate head of Emperor Claudius facing right, with finely rendered hair beneath the wreath, the portrait displaying the characteristic physiognomy of the emperor in a restrained, classicizing style. The bare neck and truncation are visible at the base of the bust. The encircling Latin legend reads TI CLAVD CAESAR AVG P M TR P VIIII IMP XVI, distributed around the periphery of the flan within a border of dots. The die work reflects the high standard of the Julio-Claudian imperial coinage, with confident engraving of facial features consistent with official portraiture of Claudius. |
