Obverse description Laureate, draped bust of the emperor Carausius facing right, with a variant showing the bust additionally cuirassed. The obverse legend IMP CARAVSIVS P F AVG encircles the portrait, proclaiming his imperial titles. The effigy reflects the bold, individualistic portraiture characteristic of late third-century Roman coinage struck in the Britannic breakaway empire. The die work exhibits the competent but somewhat provincial style associated with the Londinium mint under Carausius.
