The effigy displays strongly individualised portraiture characteristic of the late third-century Roman tradition, with the emperor's features boldly modelled. The inscription VIRTVS CARAVSI runs in the field around the bust, invoking the martial virtue of the emperor. A beaded border frames the design at the rim. |
