| Obverse description | Helmeted and cuirassed bust of Emperor Carausius facing left, depicted in martial guise with a crested helmet and elaborately decorated armour rendered in high relief. The effigy displays strongly individualised portraiture characteristic of the late third-century Roman tradition, with the emperor's features boldly modelled. The inscription VIRTVS CARAVSI runs in the field around the bust, invoking the martial virtue of the emperor. A beaded border frames the design at the rim. |
