Obverse description Laureate bare-headed bust of the emperor Caligula (Gaius Caesar) facing right, rendered with fine detail in the high-relief style characteristic of early Julio-Claudian coinage. The portrait presents a youthful, sharp-featured effigy with a wreath of laurel leaves crowning the head. The truncation of the neck is bare and unadorned. The encircling Latin legend reads C CAESAR AVG PON M TR POT III COS III, distributed around the full periphery of the field, identifying the emperor by his titles of Pontifex Maximus, holder of tribunician power for the third time, and consul for the third time.
