背面描述 A combined military and naval trophy occupies the centre of the field, mounted atop a tree trunk and composed of a helmet, cuirass, sword, spears, and a shield, symbolizing Brutus's military command. At the base of the trophy, naval elements including rudders, ships' prows, and additional shields are arranged, alluding to the fleet assembled by the conspirators. The moneyer's name CASCA LONGVS is inscribed in two lines flanking the trophy on left and right respectively, identifying Publius Servilius Casca Longus, one of the assassins of Julius Caesar. The entire design is enclosed by a dotted border.

附加信息

Struck by Marcus Junius Brutus in the months following the Ides of March assassination, this aureus was produced in mobile military mints traveling with the Liberatores' army through Macedonia and Thrace. The BRVTVS IMP legend reflects his self-proclaimed imperatorship, a title he assumed after defeating Gaius Antonius in 43 BC. Casca Longus — Publius Servilius Casca, the conspirator who struck the first blow against Caesar — served as Brutus's moneyer, making the coin's attribution an unusually direct link to the assassination itself.

Crawford places production firmly before Philippi, autumn 42 BC, where both Brutus and Cassius died and the Republican cause ended permanently.
