Obverse description Bare head of Augustus facing right, rendered in fine high relief with naturalistic portraiture characteristic of Augustan classicism. The emperor's hair is depicted with short, carefully arranged locks swept forward over the brow, consistent with canonical Augustan portraiture. The legend encircles the field, reading S P Q R CAESARI AVGVSTO, divided around the portrait. The flan is slightly irregular, as typical of hammered aurei of this period, and the surface exhibits the rich golden lustre of a high-quality official mint product.
