背面描述 A circular clipeus votivus (votive shield), depicted in shallow relief as a round boss with a raised rim, bearing the legend S·P·QR / CL·V in two lines across the field. The shield is enclosed within a large, finely rendered oak wreath (corona civica), tied at the base, the individual leaves and acorns rendered with naturalistic detail. The outer legend OB CIVIS arcs across the upper field above the wreath, completing the dedicatory inscription that commemorates the honor awarded to Augustus by the Senate and Roman People for saving the citizens. A beaded border frames the entire composition.

附加信息

This aureus belongs to a group issued following Augustus's recovery of the Roman standards lost by Crassus at Carrhae in 53 BC and by Antony in subsequent Parthian campaigns — a diplomatic triumph that Augustus promoted as a military one. The standards were returned by Parthian king Phraates IV without a battle in 20 BC, a fact Augustus quietly obscured through an aggressive coinage and monument program. The oak wreath civic crown referenced in the obverse legend had been formally voted to Augustus by the Senate in 27 BC for "saving the lives of citizens," a constitutional fiction that helped legitimize one-man rule without the title of king.
