Additional information

This aureus belongs to a group struck in the eastern mints — almost certainly Colonia Patricia or a travelling military mint — during the period when Augustus was reorganizing the coinage system following the fall of the Republic. The 19 BC date places it squarely in the years surrounding the return of the Parthian standards, a diplomatic coup Augustus exploited relentlessly in his public messaging. RIC I 63B is among the rarer die pairings of the series, distinguished by subtle reverse legend spacing that separates it from the more commonly encountered 63A.
