The creature's large, elaborately feathered wing rises prominently behind its back, rendered with fine detail. The sphinx, a personal device associated with Augustus and used as his seal, served here as a dynastic emblem. The legend CAPTA appears in the lower field in Latin capitals, forming part of the commemorative inscription ARMENIA CAPTA celebrating the Roman subjugation of Armenia under Augustus in 20–19 BC. |
