Obverse description Bare, laureate head of Augustus facing right, rendered in fine high relief with carefully detailed hair beneath the laurel wreath, characteristic of the refined portraiture of the Lugdunum mint. The legend AVGVSTVS DIVI F is distributed around the periphery of the flan, reading from left to right. The portrait displays the idealized yet naturalistic style associated with Augustan court art, presenting the emperor with a composed, authoritative expression. The field is smooth and the coin's slightly irregular flan is typical of hand-struck Roman gold coinage of this period.
