| Obverse description | Bare head of Augustus facing left, rendered in fine high relief with naturalistic portraiture characteristic of Augustan court art. The emperor's features are idealized yet individualized, with close-cropped hair rendered in short, layered strands swept forward over the brow. The legend AVGVSTVS appears in incuse Latin characters arranged around the lower portion of the field, partially encircling the portrait. The flan is slightly irregular in shape, as is typical of hammered coinage of this period. No border decoration is present, and the portrait fills the field in a confident, classical manner. |
