Zug was among the smallest and least populous of the Swiss cantons, and its autonomous coinage rights — exercised sporadically through the early eighteenth century — produced issues so minor in face value that they functioned almost exclusively as small change for local market transactions. The ⅙ Assis sits at the absolute bottom of the denomination ladder, a subdivision of a subdivision, struck in billon so debased that the metal value was essentially negligible even at the time of issue.
The forty-four year span of this type reflects intermittent rather than continuous production — Zug's mint activity was never systematic.
