Iconium operated as a Roman colony under the name Colonia Iulia Augusta Iconensium, a status granted by Augustus, which gave the city the right to produce its own bronze coinage — a privilege that distinguished it from most Galatian communities that lacked local mint authority. Issues under Vespasian from this mint are relatively few, likely reflecting the administrative disruptions of the Year of the Four Emperors that immediately preceded his reign.
