| Beschrijving voorzijde | Facing bust of the Theotokos (Virgin Mary) in orans position, arms raised with hands open in prayer. The Virgin is depicted in maphorion, with a small medallion of the Christ child on her chest in the typical Blachernitissa iconographic type. Flanking inscription ΜΡ ΘΥ (Meter Theou — Mother of God) appears in the fields to either side, with a cross motif at each shoulder. The style is characteristic of late Byzantine provincial coinage. |
