| Reverse description | Full-length frontal figure of the Emperor John III Doukas Vatatzes standing in imperial regalia, wearing a jewelled loros and crown. In his right hand he holds a labarum (staff surmounted by a cross), and in his left hand the akakia (a roll of purple silk symbolising mortality and imperial humility). The legend identifying the emperor as Despot appears in the fields to either side of the figure. The style reflects the provincial Byzantine workshop at Thessalonica. |
