Obverse description The Theotokos (Virgin Mary) depicted facing, nimbate, dressed in maphorion and tunic, standing in orant posture with arms slightly extended. The abbreviated Greek legend MHP ΘV (Meter Theou, Mother of God) appears in the field to either side of her nimbus. A six-pointed star is visible in the upper field to the right, and a decorative floral or stellar symbol appears in the lower left field. The figure is rendered in the elongated Byzantine hieratic style characteristic of Trapezuntine coinage of the early thirteenth century.
