| Obverse description | The emperor Alexios II Komnenos depicted as a mounted warrior, shown in profile riding to the right on horseback. The ruler is dressed in imperial military attire and holds a scepter or lance, the horse rendered in a stylized manner characteristic of Trapezuntine coinage. A Greek legend surrounds the figure in the field, though heavily worn on this specimen. The design follows the Byzantine tradition of imperial equestrian imagery adapted by the Komnenian rulers of Trebizond. |
