Obverse description Central field depicts the Genoese castle (tower with battlements and doorway), rendered in stylized relief, enclosed within a dotted inner circle. Eight six-pointed stars are distributed evenly around the castle in the annular field between the inner dotted circle and the outer beaded border. The circular Latin legend runs along the outer margin, reading COMVNE IANVEM, identifying the Genoese commune of Caffa. The design is characteristic of the Genoese colonial coinage struck in the Black Sea trading post.

Reverse description The reverse bears a multi-line Arabic inscription filling the entire field, arranged in three or four horizontal registers within a plain border. The text names the Mongol khan Tochtamysh (Toqtamish) of the Golden Horde, with his titles and honorifics rendered in an angular script typical of late 14th-century Jochid coinage. The legend reads in the manner of contemporary Golden Horde issues, acknowledging Tochtamysh as the overlord under whose authority the coin was issued, reflecting the political dependence of the Genoese colony of Caffa on the Golden Horde.
